Q: What is Economics?
A: Short version: Your question is too general. Go home and rethink your life.
Long Version: Economics is the study of the emergent processes caused by the limitation of resources and the respective valuation by people of those resources.
Q: Aren't all you commerce students money grubbing trust fund babies?
A: Short Version: Now I must hurt you.
Long Version: Economics uses money as a means rather than an end. It so happens that money is the best tool we have to measure how much people value goods and services. Economics is really a social science that buisinessmen highjacked for their own ends. And now I must hurt you.
Q: But economists never get anything right! The newspaper said so!
A: Short Version: *Further pummeling ensues*
Long Version: First of all that's not really a question. Second of all; When Economists get it right you will not hear about it. That'd be like a newspaper article about how there were no accidents at a French airshow. Economists work behind the scenes to evaluate and understand why the panicky idiots of the general population are doing what they're doing and how to correct it.
Q: What practical use is there for economics? You can't change the way people think!
A: Short Version: I disagree. The Full frontal lobotomy I am about to administer will definetly change the way you think.
Long Version: Because people are panicky idiots we can make them panic in the correct direction.
More as it comes into the news room. We'll stay with this all night if we have to.

Self Validation
I'm going to take this as an unsubtle attempt at justifying your silly uni course. The real question is who are you trying to justify it to?Personally I think starting/wanting to start your own business type thing would be a better argument.
But do tell, who was it that incited this rant?

I shouldn't think I have to justify my course to anyone, least of all me. I know what I'm doing.
